Tuya Power Meter Overload Alarm Notification

Recently, I encountered an overload alarm notification on my Tuya smart power meter. This raised an immediate concern: Will the overload protection cut off power to the entire house?

After investigating the issue, I confirmed that the Tuya power meter does not cut off the main power supply. Instead, it only switches off the “software” of the connected device. Device will go offline and online again shortly based on the IOT Tuya data logging. The rest of the electrical system remains operational.

To illustrate this, I conducted a test comparing power and voltage before and after the overload event. The device simply turns off its software-controlled relay, while the main power supply remains stable.

Mistranslation and Firmware Limitations

It turns out that this overload notification is actually a mistranslation of the issue. The alarm may not indicate a true overload but rather a measurement anomaly or firmware behavior.

Unfortunately, IOT Tuya only keep one week of data where I dont have data to confirm this is due to firmware update. Also, there is no way to turn off this notification or reduce the firmware’s measurement frequency, which means users will continue to see these alerts even if no real danger is present.

Final Assessment:

  • The most likely cause is a Tuya firmware change.

    • The “out of memory” issue could have forced the device to restart.
    • If the logging frequency increased, power fluctuations would appear more chaotic even if actual consumption remained the same.
    • Overload alarms aligning with memory errors suggest an internal software issue rather than a supplier change.
  • An energy supplier change is still possible but less likely.

    • If this were the main cause, voltage variations should be much more erratic, and you would likely see fluctuations in other appliances too.
  • UPDATE: shutdown the power meter for 5 minuts and restart

    • Notification of overload stopped appearing for 5days now.
    • Will update if have new observation

If you’re using a Tuya power meter and see an overload alarm, there’s no need to worry about a complete power outage—your main supply remains active, and only the connected device is turned off at software level and restart quite fast.
